Website Architecture

In short

Website architecture is how a site's pages are organised and linked together — navigation, categories, hubs and internal links. A clear, shallow structure helps users find things and helps search engines understand importance and topics.

Flat vs deep structures#

In a flat structure, every important page is reachable within about three clicks of the homepage. In a deep structure, pages hide five or more clicks down and get crawled and valued less. Aim flat, but logical.

A typical blog/business structure#

Principles#

  • Group content by topic into hubs or pillar pages.
  • Keep main navigation short and focused on what users need most.
  • Use breadcrumbs to show hierarchy.
  • Add contextual internal links between related pages.
  • Reflect the hierarchy in clean URLs where it helps.
  • Avoid orphan pages and endless filter combinations.
