Orphan Page

In short

An orphan page is a page on your website that no other page links to. Search engines and visitors struggle to find it, so it's often crawled rarely and ranks poorly.

On this page

How orphan pages happen#

  • Landing pages built for ads or campaigns and never linked from the site.
  • Old posts pushed off paginated archives with no other links.
  • Pages removed from menus during a redesign.
  • Products discontinued from categories but still published.
  • Pages created by plugins or imports that you didn’t know about.

How to find them#

  1. Export every URL you have: your XML sitemap, CMS export, and pages with traffic in GA4 or Search Console.
  2. Crawl the site with a crawler (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb) starting from the homepage — it only finds linked pages.
  3. Compare the lists. URLs in the first list but not in the crawl are orphans. (Screaming Frog can do this automatically when connected to GA4/GSC and sitemaps.)

What to do with each#

Orphan page is… Action
Valuable Add contextual internal links from related pages and a hub
Duplicate or weak Merge and 301 redirect
Campaign-only Keep, but noindex
Obsolete Delete (404/410) or redirect if links point to it

Related: internal linking strategy, crawlability.
