Search Volume

In short

Search volume is the estimated average number of times a keyword is searched per month in a given location. It indicates demand, but tool estimates vary widely and ignore click-through and intent.

Where the numbers come from#

Google Keyword Planner shows ranges (e.g. 1K–10K) unless you run active ad campaigns. SEO tools model their own estimates from clickstream data and Google Ads data. Expect differences of 2× or more between tools, and treat every figure as a rough guide.

Why volume isn’t everything#

  • Clicks ≠ searches: AI Overviews, featured snippets and ads take many clicks before organic results.
  • Intent beats volume: 50 searches a month for “hire wordpress developer pune” can be worth more than 50,000 for “what is wordpress”.
  • Pages rank for many variants: the combined volume of a keyword cluster matters more than one phrase.
  • Seasonality: monthly averages hide peaks — check Google Trends.
  • Zero-volume keywords can still bring valuable traffic — see zero-volume keywords.

Better ways to judge demand#

  1. Check Search Console impressions for queries you already appear for.
  2. Look at a tool’s “traffic potential” — traffic to the current top page across all its keywords.
  3. Combine volume with business value and ranking chance before prioritising.
