Keyword Difficulty

In short

Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score from SEO tools estimating how hard it is to rank in the top 10 for a keyword, based mostly on the backlink strength of pages that currently rank.

How KD scores work#

Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and others each calculate difficulty differently, usually on a 0–100 scale. Most weigh the number and quality of links pointing to the current top results. That makes KD a useful first filter, but it ignores content quality, intent match, site topical authority and SERP features.

Read KD alongside the actual results#

  • Are sites similar to yours (size, niche) ranking on page one?
  • Do weak results exist — forum threads, outdated posts, thin pages?
  • Is the page one dominated by big brands, marketplaces or government sites?
  • How much of the screen do ads, AI Overviews, maps or videos take?
  • Do you already have topical authority around this subject?

A practical approach#

Site stage Target
New site Low KD, long-tail, very specific intent
Growing site Medium KD within your core topics
Established authority Competitive head terms, supported by clusters

Compare scores within one tool only — a 30 in one tool can be a 50 in another. Related: keyword research guide, search volume.
