Local SEO for Indian Businesses: From Google Business Profile to Reviews

A practical local SEO playbook for shops, clinics, agencies and service businesses in India — Google Business Profile optimisation, NAP consistency, reviews, local pages and the metrics that matter.

On this page

Key takeaways

  • Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t change distance, so work on the other two.
  • Your Google Business Profile is your most important local asset — often more visible than your website.
  • Reviews are both a ranking signal and a conversion tool. Build a simple system to ask for them every week.

If you run a clinic in Pune, a hardware store in Vasai or a digital agency in Mumbai, most of your customers search with local intent: “dentist near me”, “AC repair Andheri”, “best cafe in Koregaon Park”. Those searches show the map pack — three businesses with ratings, directions and a call button. Local SEO is how you get into it.

How Google ranks local results#

Google’s own documentation lists three main factors:

Factor What it means What you control
Relevance How well your profile matches the search Categories, services, description, website content
Distance How far you are from the searcher or searched location Very little (your real address)
Prominence How well-known and trusted you are Reviews, links, mentions, website authority

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile#

Create or claim your profile at google.com/business and complete verification. Then fill in everything:

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your signboard — no keyword stuffing (“Best Dentist Pune Sharma Clinic” violates guidelines and risks suspension).
  • Primary category: the single most important relevance setting. Choose the most specific option (e.g. “Pediatric dentist” rather than “Dentist” if that’s your focus).
  • Secondary categories for other real services.
  • Address or service area, phone, website and accurate hours (including holiday hours for Diwali, Eid, Christmas).
  • Services and products with short descriptions and prices where possible.
  • Description (750 characters) explaining what you do, who you serve and where.
  • Attributes such as wheelchair access, UPI accepted, women-led, online appointments.

More in the Google Business Profile entry.

Step 2: Make NAP consistent everywhere#

NAP is your Name, Address and Phone number. It should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Facebook, Instagram, Practo (for clinics) and other directories. Inconsistent details — old phone numbers, different address formats — confuse both customers and search engines. See NAP consistency.

Quick win Search your business name plus your old phone number. Every listing that shows the old number is a listing to update.

Step 3: Build a review engine#

Reviews influence both rankings and whether people choose you. A steady stream of recent, detailed reviews beats a burst of 50 in one week.

  1. Get your review link from the Business Profile dashboard and shorten it.
  2. Ask at the right moment — right after a successful service, when satisfaction is highest.
  3. Make it effortless: send the link on WhatsApp with a one-line request, or print a QR code at the counter.
  4. Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a few days. Thank people by name and address complaints calmly.
  5. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them — it violates Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or the profile restricted.

Step 4: Post photos and updates regularly#

Upload real photos of your storefront (so people recognise it), interior, team and work. Use Google Business Profile posts for offers, events and new services. Active profiles give customers confidence and give Google fresh information.

  • Put your city and service in title tags of key pages: “Physiotherapy Clinic in Baner, Pune | Name”.
  • Show NAP in the footer and on a contact page with an embedded map.
  • Add LocalBusiness schema (or a more specific type like Dentist or Store) with address, geo-coordinates, hours and phone.
  • Create individual pages for each location you physically serve — with unique content, not copy-pasted text with the city swapped.
  • Make phone numbers tap-to-call and add a WhatsApp button on mobile.

Local prominence grows from being part of your community online: local news coverage, chamber of commerce or trade association listings, sponsoring college events, partnering with nearby businesses, and getting listed on credible local blogs. A handful of relevant local backlinks can outperform dozens of generic directory links.

Step 7: Track what matters#

Metric Where to find it
Calls, direction requests, website clicks Google Business Profile → Performance
Searches that found your profile Business Profile performance search terms
Local organic traffic and queries Search Console (filter by page) and GA4
Map pack rankings across your area Grid-based rank trackers (paid tools)
Review count, rating and response rate Business Profile

Tag the website link in your Business Profile with UTM parameters (e.g. ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp) so GA4 shows exactly how much traffic and how many leads it brings.

Common local SEO mistakes#

  • Keyword-stuffed business names (risk of suspension).
  • Using a virtual office address that doesn’t meet Google’s guidelines.
  • Wrong primary category.
  • Ignoring negative reviews.
  • Duplicate profiles for the same location.

Local SEO FAQ#

How long does local SEO take?#

Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Building prominence through reviews and links is an ongoing process that compounds over months.

Can I rank in Google Maps without a website?#

Yes, a complete Business Profile can rank on its own, but a good website strengthens relevance and prominence and converts more visitors.

Do I need a physical address?#

Businesses that serve customers at their location need a real address. Service-area businesses can hide their address and define the areas they serve instead.
