Thin Content

In short

Thin content is content that provides little or no value to users — such as near-empty pages, auto-generated text, doorway pages or copied material. It can drag down how search engines judge a whole site.

Common examples#

  • Pages with a few sentences and no real answer.
  • Doorway pages: many near-identical pages targeting different cities or keywords.
  • Auto-generated or mass-produced content with no original value.
  • Scraped or lightly rewritten content from other sites.
  • Affiliate pages that only repeat manufacturer descriptions.
  • Tag archives, empty category pages and thin author pages left indexable.

Why it matters#

Google’s systems assess helpfulness at page and site level. A large share of unhelpful pages can weigh down how the rest of the site performs, and some thin-content patterns violate spam policies such as doorway abuse and scaled content abuse.

How to fix it#

Page type Action
Valuable topic, weak page Improve: add depth, examples, visuals
Several weak pages on one topic Merge and 301-redirect
Useful for users, not for search Keep, add noindex
No value, no traffic, no links Delete (404/410) or redirect if a relevant page exists
