Keyword Cannibalization

In short

Keyword cannibalization happens when several pages on the same site target the same keyword and intent, so they compete with each other and none ranks as well as one consolidated page would.

On this page

When is it a real problem?#

Two pages ranking for the same keyword isn’t always bad — Google sometimes shows two results from one site. It becomes a problem when rankings flip between URLs, neither page reaches the top positions, or the wrong page (e.g. an old post instead of the service page) ranks.

How to find it#

  • In Search Console → Performance, filter by a query and open the Pages tab. Multiple pages with impressions for the same query is a signal.
  • Search site:yourdomain.com keyword to see competing pages.
  • Review your content list for near-duplicate titles and topics.

How to fix it#

Situation Fix
Two similar articles on the same topic Merge into one stronger page and 301-redirect the other
Pages serve different intents Differentiate titles, content and internal anchors
Blog post outranks the service page Link from the post to the service page with a clear anchor; refocus the post
Duplicate URLs (parameters, categories) Use a canonical tag

Prevent it by clustering keywords during keyword research and checking existing content before writing a new piece.
