Engagement Rate (GA4)

In short

In Google Analytics 4, engagement rate is the percentage of sessions that were engaged — lasting longer than 10 seconds, having a key event, or viewing at least two pages. It is the inverse of GA4's bounce rate.

What counts as an engaged session?#

GA4 counts a session as engaged if it:

  • lasts longer than 10 seconds (adjustable), or
  • includes a key event (formerly called a conversion), or
  • has two or more page or screen views.

Engagement rate = engaged sessions ÷ total sessions. GA4’s bounce rate is simply the opposite: the percentage of sessions that were not engaged.

How it differs from old bounce rate#

In Universal Analytics, a bounce was any single-page session — even if someone read your article for five minutes. GA4’s definition is more useful for blogs because a long single-page read now counts as engaged.

Using it for SEO and content#

  • Compare engagement rate across landing pages from organic search.
  • Low engagement on a page that ranks well may signal an intent mismatch or a slow, cluttered page.
  • Pair it with average engagement time and key events to judge content quality.
