| Bounce rate | Share of non-engaged sessions | Your analytics |
| Pogo-sticking | Quickly bouncing back and clicking another result | Search engines only |
What we know#
Google hasn’t confirmed dwell time as a direct ranking factor, and individual dwell times are noisy — a short visit can mean the user found the answer instantly. However, evidence from the 2023 US antitrust trial showed Google uses aggregated click and interaction data in some ranking systems. In practice, pages that genuinely satisfy searchers tend to perform better over time.
Improving satisfaction (and dwell time)#
- Answer the main question early and clearly.
- Structure content so readers can find their section fast (table of contents, descriptive headings).
- Add depth for those who want it: examples, visuals, code, FAQs.
- Offer relevant next reads with internal links.
- Make the page fast and comfortable to read on phones.
