GA4 vs Universal Analytics definitions#
| Universal Analytics (retired 2023) | GA4 | |
|---|---|---|
| A “bounce” was… | Any single-page session, even a 10-minute read | A session that was not engaged |
| Engaged session | — | Lasts 10+ seconds, has a key event, or 2+ page views |
| Formula | Single-page sessions ÷ sessions | 100% − engagement rate |
Is bounce rate a ranking factor?#
No. Google doesn’t use your analytics data for rankings, and Google Analytics isn’t installed on most of the web anyway. Bounce rate is a diagnostic for you, not a signal for Google.
Reading bounce rate sensibly#
- A high bounce rate on a definition page may be fine — the visitor got the answer.
- A high bounce rate on a service or landing page usually signals a problem.
- Compare pages of the same type and traffic source rather than the site average.
Common fixes#
- Match the page to the search intent and promise in the title.
- Speed up loading, especially on mobile.
- Put the key answer or offer above the fold.
- Add relevant internal links and a clear next step.
- Remove intrusive pop-ups that appear on arrival.
