What AEO means#
Traditional SEO aims for a ranking position and a click. AEO aims for your content to become the answer — quoted in an AI Overview, read out by a voice assistant, summarised by ChatGPT or Perplexity, or shown as a featured snippet. It’s closely related to GEO (generative engine optimisation); the terms are often used interchangeably.
Why it matters#
- A growing share of questions are answered directly on the results page or inside an AI tool.
- Being cited builds brand visibility and trust even when users don’t click immediately.
- Answer engines still pull from indexed web pages, so good SEO foundations remain the entry ticket.
How to optimise for answer engines#
- Answer first: put a one- or two-sentence direct answer immediately under each question-style heading.
- Use extractable formats: definitions, numbered steps, comparison tables and short lists.
- Cover follow-up questions on the same page so one source can satisfy the whole query.
- Be specific: numbers, dates, named tools and clear recommendations beat vague advice.
- Strengthen entities: consistent author and brand information with structured data.
- Show trust: real authorship, sources and first-hand experience (E-E-A-T).
Measuring AEO#
There’s no single “AEO ranking”. Track Search Console impressions alongside clicks, referral traffic from AI tools in GA4 (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com), growth in branded searches, and manual checks of who gets cited for your priority questions.
