How to Choose a Domain Name

Your domain is your address on the internet and part of your brand. Learn how to choose a memorable domain, pick the right extension (.com, .in and others), and avoid legal and technical traps.

Key takeaways

  • A good domain is short, memorable, easy to spell and say, and matches your brand.
  • .com is still the default; .in or .co.in works well for India-focused businesses.
  • Register it in the business’s name, enable auto-renew and 2FA, and protect common variations.

Your domain is your online address — on business cards, ads, emails and every link to your site. Changing it later is possible but costly. Spend a little time choosing well.

Qualities of a great domain#

  • Brandable: unique and memorable (iftikhar.in, thynkdigital.in).
  • Short: ideally under 15 characters.
  • Easy to spell and pronounce — passes the “radio test” (say it aloud; can someone type it correctly?).
  • No hyphens or numbers unless part of your brand.
  • Not confusing with competitors or trademarks — check trademark registries.
  • Available on social platforms with the same handle, if possible.

Choosing an extension (TLD)#

TLD Best for
.com Global brands, default trust
.in / .co.in Businesses focused on India; signals local relevance
.org Non-profits and communities
.io, .ai, .app, .dev Tech products and SaaS (some require HTTPS)
City/industry TLDs Niche branding; less familiar to users

Google treats country-code domains like .in as geo-targeted to that country, which helps local relevance but can limit international reach. Generic TLDs (.com, .io, .app) have no country association.

Keywords in domains#

Exact-match domains (like “best-seo-services-mumbai.com”) no longer carry special ranking power and can look spammy. A brandable name builds long-term trust and recognition. A descriptive word is fine if it’s part of a natural brand.

Registering safely#

  1. Use a reputable registrar (Cloudflare Registrar, Namecheap, GoDaddy, Google-partner registrars, BigRock for .in).
  2. Register in the business owner’s account, not your developer’s.
  3. Enable auto-renew, registrar lock and two-factor authentication.
  4. Use privacy protection where available.
  5. Consider registering common misspellings and the .com/.in pair, redirecting them to the main domain.
  6. Set up DNS for website and email — see DNS explained and business email.

Buying an existing domain#

Check its history before buying: Wayback Machine snapshots, backlink profile and whether it was used for spam. A domain with a manual action or toxic history can be hard to rank.

Domain name FAQ#

Does the domain affect SEO?#

Only slightly. Brand strength, content and links matter far more than the domain itself.

Can I change my domain later?#

Yes, with 301 redirects and Search Console’s Change of Address tool — see site migration.

Should I use www?#

Either is fine. Pick one and redirect the other.
