Website Redesign Checklist (Without Losing Rankings)

A redesign should increase leads, not wipe out years of SEO. This checklist covers goals, content audit, UX, SEO preservation, testing and launch so your new site performs better from day one.

Key takeaways

  • Redesigns lose rankings when URLs change without redirects, content is removed or technical settings break.
  • Benchmark before, protect top pages, redirect every changed URL and test on staging.
  • Monitor Search Console and analytics closely for at least a month after launch.

A redesign should make your site faster, clearer and better at converting — not wipe out years of SEO. Use this checklist from planning to post-launch.

Before the redesign#

  • Define goals: what should improve (conversions, speed, brand, content structure)?
  • Export Search Console performance (pages and queries, 12–16 months) and GA4 landing pages with conversions.
  • Crawl the current site and save URLs, titles, descriptions, H1s and canonicals.
  • Identify top pages by traffic, conversions and backlinks — these must keep their content and URLs where possible.
  • Record Core Web Vitals and page speed as a baseline.

During design and build#

  • Keep URLs unchanged where possible; plan 301 redirects for any that change — see site migration checklist.
  • Don’t remove content from ranking pages for the sake of minimalism; restructure it instead (tabs, accordions, better headings).
  • Preserve internal links to important pages.
  • Carry over titles, meta descriptions, structured data and alt text.
  • Design mobile-first; test tap targets and readability — see responsive design.
  • Set performance budgets (image sizes, scripts) — see speed optimization.
  • Check accessibility — see accessibility checklist.
  • Build on a password-protected, noindexed staging site.

Pre-launch QA#

Launch day#

  1. Back up the old site.
  2. Deploy, remove staging protection, untick “Discourage search engines”.
  3. Test redirects, forms and checkout live.
  4. Submit the sitemap and inspect key URLs in Search Console.

After launch (4–8 weeks)#

  • Watch 404s and server errors daily for the first week.
  • Compare clicks and conversions weekly with the baseline.
  • Fix dropped pages by comparing old vs new content and links.
  • Collect user feedback and analytics to iterate.

Website redesign FAQ#

Will a redesign improve SEO?#

It can, if it improves speed, structure, content and UX while preserving what already ranks.

Is a temporary traffic dip normal?#

Small fluctuations are common for a few weeks. Large or lasting drops indicate a problem to investigate.

Should I redesign or refresh?#

If the structure and platform are sound, a visual refresh and content improvements may give most benefits with less risk.
