Domain Authority

In short

Domain Authority (DA) is a third-party score from Moz that estimates how likely a website is to rank, based mainly on its backlink profile. Google does not use DA or similar scores like Ahrefs' DR.

On this page

DA, DR and AS#

Metric Provider Scale
Domain Authority (DA) Moz 1–100
Domain Rating (DR) Ahrefs 0–100
Authority Score (AS) Semrush 0–100

Each tool calculates its score differently, mostly from the quantity and quality of linking domains. Scores are logarithmic — moving from 20 to 30 is much easier than from 70 to 80.

Is it a Google ranking factor?#

No. Google has repeatedly said it doesn’t use these third-party metrics. They’re estimates designed to approximate link-based authority.

How to use it sensibly#

  • Compare your site with competitors in the same niche.
  • Roughly qualify link opportunities — alongside relevance and real traffic.
  • Track long-term trends in your link-building efforts.

Don’t buy links because a site has high DA; relevance and genuine audience matter far more. Related: backlinks, topical authority.
